Miami Township/Milford Coalition
On Aging
Organized
in 1992. Members
are from our community senior population, governmental officials, Fire/EMS &
police department. Established to enhance the quality of life for the senior
citizens in Miami Township / Milford community. The coalition sponsors programs
that area organizations offer to senior citizens. Meetings are held on an as
needed basis, usually once a month. This provides a time for seniors to interact
with each other and their government officials.
Senior
Home Safety Program
This is a program that provides
instruction in home safety issues. We use instructional videos, a computer
presentation and lecture. The seniors are also provided with information in the
form of handouts. Along with this program we offer free in home safety
inspections for senior citizens. We are able to provide smoke detectors, fire
extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors during the program. This program was
established in 1997 and revised in 2001.
See
the Safety Inspection Form here.
Senior Knox Box Program
We provide (Loan) a small safe-like
box that attaches to the seniors home entry door. The Knox Box opens with a
special key available only to Miami Township Fire & EMS personnel. The
Knox Box then allows entry into the protected home. This decreases
the likelihood of property damage caused by forcing entry into a senior citizens
home. These Knox Boxes are similar to Boxes used to protect businesses.
There are 28 Miami Township seniors currently protected with Knox Box's owned by
Miami Township Fire & EMS. All boxes were purchased with donations.
IAFF 3768 has purchased 3 Knox Boxes for this program. The Senior Knox Box
Program was established in 1995.
Gate Keeper Program
Miami Township Fire & EMS crews
are trained to recognize and assist senior citizens that may be at risk of
health problems, due to the resident’s physical, emotional or environmental
conditions. The responders then provide a pathway to area organizations for
appropriate assistance. A ‘Gate Keeper’ is a person with our department that
coordinates the program and makes all referral calls to area organizations.
Follow-up is also provided to the employees who recognize any problems with our
area senior citizens. The Gate Keeper Program was established in 1993.
